On November 7, 1936, the Republican government moved from Madrid to Valencia, which became the provisional capital of the Second Spanish Republic, in the midst of the Civil War, until October 31, 1937. During this short but crucial period, the city changed completely, both in terms of its urban landscape and the daily lives of its inhabitants.

The arrival of intellectuals, artists, politicians, refugees, journalists, spies, and diplomats transformed Valencia into a cosmopolitan city where life revolved around literary cafés, cinemas, theaters, and social clubs, which were constantly bustling. But Valencia was also a city besieged by bombs, so the authorities had to work on building air-raid shelters to protect the population from the bombings during the war.

With the aim of exploring this part of Valencia's history and the enduring traces of the war, we have organized this tour so you can relive with us that turbulent period of the 1930s through the most important historical sites that witnessed the city's living history during those days. We will visit the locations where state institutions were established, such as ministries, the headquarters of the main political parties and unions, the hotels where journalists and diplomats stayed, the signs of the bombings, and the interiors of the air-raid shelters at Valencia City Hall and on Serranos Street.
